Living in the Divine Parenthesis

Frank weighs-in on the outreach vs. inreach debate among Christians (evangelism/social justice vs. community/communion), approaching it from a unique perspective and giving a clarion call regarding God's mission in the earth. The supplemental resources mentioned in the talk can be found on Frank's blog. Delivered to a missional church.

I like what you are doing through the church! I believe 20 something year olds are very attuned to your message already which is why they don’t attend churches, in general. As a spiritual director, I’m finding that most pastors of mainline churches are resistant to bringing “listening & responding” to the living Christ into the church. They seem to see it as “naval-gazing” or the “occult”. They continue to preach “about” Jesus from the pulpit. Any suggestions on how to bring more living awareness into churches?

There’s this thing that keeps happening when I listen to your messages. As I listen, everything resonates so deeply within me, and I feel an intense spiritual hunger to make the message a more practical reality in my life, and then you say, “Ok, now here’s the practical stuff..” and my soul rejoices that it’s hunger is going to be filled. And then the message ends. And a part of me dies.

Steven, Frank only shares the practicals face-to-face with a group, given that the practicals for a message like this are very localized and specific to a particular group or church. If your church (or pastor) invites Frank to speak, then the practical dimension will be brought in.
